Wapsipinicon River The Wapsipinicon River, is northeast Iowa’s longest bluff-country river. In its headwaters, actually, it’s much more a prairie creek, and then gains water throughout a state-designated Protected Water Area from Tripoli to Independence, interesting flatwater paddling areas surrounded by marsh with thick stands of river birch and silver maples enclosing your view. This upper area can be tricky with lots of portages around deadfalls, though, so short trips with extra time programmed in is recommended.
The more popular paddling stretches of the Wapsi are where it begins to cut through limestone bedrock from Troy Mills to a stretch downriver from Anamosa. Then the Wapsi gradually becomes a large, slow river, occasionally with nice stands of woods, on its way to the Mississippi. Recent River Level Readings - taken from NOAA Location: Independence
