Skunk
South Park in Story City to
Cambridge Pond
River Miles: 28
Counties: Story
Recommended Flow: 150 - 300 cfs

Recommended Craft: Any
boat will do, depending on stream flow and length of trip.
Type of Water: Mostly flat with some
class Is, and a class II.
Overview of this section: A
typical Central Iowa stream. Scenic, with some swift current to keep
things interesting. The character changes below Ames where the channel was
once straightened.
Hazard and Rapids: Beware
of strainers in the upper section, particularly below 150th St where a
large logjam often requires a portage. Rock riffles are frequent in the
upper 18-20 miles. There's a low water farm crossing south of Story City
& low-head dams just North of Ames and at River Vally Park. The first
dam is easily portaged (river-right) at most levels. The second dam must
be portaged (river right). Take out at the "dam ahead" sign.
Camping?: There are
primitive streamside camp sites at the mouth of Bear Creek and at
McFarland Park.
Other Launches?: Access
points are maintained every 3-4 miles for the first 18 miles. The final 10
miles are under development as an extension of the Skunk River Water
Trail. Maps are available from Story County Conservation, www.storycountyconservation.org.
Places to rent or buy outdoor equipment:
JAX/Ames Outdoor Gear, ISU Recreation Services
Other items of interest about this area:
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Overall opinion of this section: A
very nice local float trip.
