South Skunk River
South Skunk at Sopers Mill, submitted by Rick Dietz The South Skunk River is the larger of the two branches of the Skunk River that join in Keokuk County. It is paddled most in Story County, and has been channelized for a great length from near its crossing of Interstate 35 to near the Mahaska-Keokuk county border. One area of interest for paddlers the South Skunk is in northeast Polk County at Chichauqua Bottoms, a wilderness restoration project with numerous restored wetlands that has re-watered some of the old river bends. There is a canoe-trail where paddlers can explore some of these, but bring mosquito nets in the summer! Recent River Level Readings - taken from NOAA Location: Near Ames
