CFS: No guage
Recommended Craft: Recreational
Type of Water: Mostly flat with several riffles.
Overview of this section: A beautiful, but rainfall-dependant stream. Flint Creek possesses the character of streams normally found 150 miles further north, including high rock bluffs, rugged hills, and rocky riffles. The bottom is mostly sand, but gravel bars are also seen. The most scenic section is through the Starr's Cave Park & Nature Preserve, which has 100 foot limestone bluffs and a neat elevated pedestrian bridge. The last mile of this trip is on the Mississippi, with the take out at the Port of Burlington boat ramp, right after a spectacular view of the cable-stayed Burlington bridge.
Hazard and Rapids: Several fun riffles, especially in Starr's Cave Park. Though pretty, the creek does have some water- quality problems, and swimming in it isn't recommended. The last mile, on the Mississippi, watch for waves, powerboat wakes and barges. It isn't on the main navigation channel, but it does pass what looks like a barge docking port.
Camping?: Not on the river, or in Starr's Cave Park, but in other Des Moines County parks- see the web address below.
Other Launches?: In Starr's Cave Park, or at The Irish Ridge Road bridge. The Highway 99 bridge looks possible but steep.
Places to rent or buy outdoor equipment: River Basin Canoe & Kayak, Burlington, Iowa. (319)752-1857
Other items of interest about this area: Starr's Cave Park & Nature Center offer hiking, caves, & a nature center.
Overall opinion of this section: A paddling experience unlike anything else in southeast Iowa for those willing to wait for favorable water levels. For more information & pictures: http://www.dmcconservation.com click on Starr's Cave Park & Nature Preserve, or "See Our Bridge."
