Skill Level: Intermediate
Date of Paddle: 8/04
CFS: 375
Recommended Craft: Recreational but a whitewater capable craft if running the rapids at Sportsman Park.
Type of Water: Mostly flat with some class Is, and a class II.
Overview of this section: An often overlooked section of the Boone! You'd be hard pressed to find another paddler here. Not as wooded or hilly as the lower Boone but the solitude makes up for it. Good fishing for catfish with some smallies available. Don't try this section when water levels are low, you'll be walking alot.
Hazard and Rapids: Sportsman Park has a big ledge drop - around 3 - 4'. This rapid has most of its fall on the east edge while the western half is more gradient. This rapid lasts for about 40'. You can portage around it, run it, or start below it. Also there are a few downed trees and some smaller rapids to contend with but nothing major.
Camping?: There is camping at Webster City's Riverside Park and Briggs Woods.
Other Launches?: Troy Park is about 2.75 miles downstream from Sportsman. Nakomis it the next designated take-out. There are a number of roads that cross the river where one could also take-out.
Places to rent or buy outdoor equipment: Webster City has: Shopper Supply, Kmart, and Sports World. No places to rent.
Other items of interest about this area: Nothing out of the ordinary.
Overall opinion of this section: Great! A good alternate paddle when other rivers in this area are running high. Good park-and-play spot as well.
