|
|
Here is a list of some activities centered around the Boone this year:
1. Boone Bash River Dash. Canoe and Kayak races on the Boone. We will also have foot races, golf tournaments, long drive competitions, community bbq, awards, entertainment, and a street dance. boonebashriverdash.com (not done yet) - June 9th.
2. Boone River Canoe Camp. The City of Webster City (namely me) and Hamilton County Conservation are putting together a canoe float for the less experienced. We are inviting families to come out and learn how to canoe. We will also have presentations on fishing, river sampling, the geologic and cultural history or the Boone River, lunch, free camping at briggs woods, etc. I'll fill you in when sign ups become available. July 14th. Thanks to the DNR for potential funding and some staffing for this.
3. Boone River Cleanup. ISU extension, City of W.C., Hamilton County Conservation and the local schools are getting together for a cleanup of the boone river. T-shirts should be available to volunteers - also some education on water quality. Aug 11th tentative. Give me an email if interested. Also thanks to the DNR for the clear minigrant.
4. IDNR PWA. There are going to be a number of meetings and goings on pertaining to the Boone River PWA pilot project. Posible conservation easements, aquisitions, etc. Look at the dnr website for more info.
5. Boone River Watershed Associations. This is a group of concerned citizens, business owners, and farmers that have teamed up with Prairie Rivers RC&D, The Nature Conservancy, Iowa Soybean Assn, and Hamilton County Conservation to protect water quality and educate people on their impact of this watershed. There are a number of meetings (the next is tomorrow) but if you are interested in future meetings please let me know.
6. Water Trails. The Boone River (primarily Hamilton County Conservation) has received from money to put up signage, maps, and kiosks along the Boone River (kind of old news but hopefully we can start work on this in 07).
7. Briggs Woods. The diversion dike is complete and hopefully will start impacting the lake and watershed soon (less ag nutrient impact).
If any of you are interested in helping out please let me know. Or if you are interested in putting something like this on in your area, I'd be glad to help. _________________ http://www.paddlingiowa.com

Definitely interested in the canoe camp and cleanup of the Boone River. Our church youth group, Washington Lutheran in Duncombe and veterans of AWARE, surely would be interested in both events. Keep us posted when details arise. Thanks

| Thanks for all your work in this area Brian - the Boone is a beautiful little river & definitely deserves some "publicity" & protection. Although I live east of you now, I'm still less than an hour away, and will try to make it back for some of the events. I think I can make it over for the River Dash, and I really like the idea of the family canoe / camping weekend, but I don't know if we can make it that weekend. |

Hi Brian !
Hope to make it next weekend, but won't know for sure until Thursday.
Are you still wanting me to bring down some strippers ? I have a friend that might also bring a boat or two.
Also are you setting things up the same as last year ?
Thanks !
