Red Rock
Review(s)
Submitted By: Ben Petty
AKA: bpetty
Put In: Elk Rock State Park - East boat ramp
Take Out: same
Date of Paddle: May, 2003
Overview of this Section: Red Rock is a massive
reservoir of the Des Moines River found just north of Knoxville, Iowa.
From the east boat ramp of Elk Rock State Park, paddle west (towards the
mile-long bridge) for a tour of the high rock cliffs, and the many
swallows that live there. The action of water over the years has eroded
away some interesting features in the multi-colored sandstone, and if you
"hug the shoreline", sheer cliffs tower over the paddler in many
areas. Use caution, as a few areas in this section would require a
somewhat lengthy swim to find a place where you could drag to shore and
right a capsized boat, and the action of wind and powerboats can make this
lake rough at times.
Is there camping available: Yes - nearby at Elk
Rock State Park Other launches in this section: Painted Rock and Robert's
Creek Park - both on the north side of the Lake, as well as various
"backwater" locations where roads cross (or end) at the water.
Other items of interest about this area: There
is over 52,000 acres of contiguous public water and land here - the most
in Iowa. The midwest's tallest observation tower overlooks the area at
Cordova Park, and for bikers and hikers - the Volkweg trail runs around
much of the north and east ends of the lake, and has interpretive signs at
several locations.
Overall opinion of this lake: A good touring
trip with some unique & scenic views. Very good region for wildlife /
bird watching.
